FREE RANGE COLOURED HENS from Ty-mynydd Farm, Stanleytown, Rhondda.

We started with six, we now grow on hundreds of chicks and keep two small laying flocks on the mountain. Our laying hens range outdoors in all weathers. We rear all the birds indoors upto 8 weeks of age then free range rear as the weather permits, confining them on sale days so they are easy to catch !!!

Beware of cheaply 'cage reared' birds which dominate the market and do not make impulse purchases at shows, do your homework and buy direct from breeders or growers where the birds have not been moved to/from other premises bringing problems with them.

After you have seen below what ages are available, see Price List for details of cost of different ages of breeds

THE DETAILS BELOW ARE UPDATED WEEKLY PRIOR TO THE SATURDAY OPENING FOR COLLECTION, ALL ARE REARED TOGETHER, SO MIXING IS FINE. WE ARE UNABLE TO RESERVE BIRDS 14 WEEKS AND OVER

BLACKROCK

OR

BOVANS NERA

A bombproof bird in all weathers, which we rely on. Very consistant egg production in bad weather and exposed sites. 290 eggs/year. An extra oily outer black feather shows a greeny, purple sheen - stunning and hypnotic.

SUSSEX PONT

A strain developed from selected breeding of light sussex and crossing with other heavy laying pure breeds. A very friendly and attractive bird when mature and a often chosen for an attractive laying flock. Often first to lay, seeing 300 eggs per year

Day old chicks

9 week olds

RHONDDA BLUE

A similar gentle temperament to the sussex with a similar quick growth rate and laying ability. Shades of colour vary from lavender to slate grey. Often with a choice of neck fleck fron ginger to a cream lacing, plenty of large eggs

Day old chicks

9 week olds

WHITE LEGHORN Very active and attractive fantail, great layer at over 300 white eggs/year. Very confident and a bit snobbish , often preferring the company of other leghorns. My favourite egg with a bigger yolk to white ratio.

Day old chicks

CUCKOO MARAN Very friendly, often fethered feet, compact bird laying lots of darker speckled eggs

Day old chicks

RHONDDA RANGER Everyone likes a brown chicken in their little flock. The ranger is a cheeky small layer, and the first to find the thing you dont want them to do. With an attractive black tail and flight feather, looks like a Columbian Blacktail. Approx 270 eggs per year

day old chicks

RHONDDA PEARL This is the birds we mix with the blackrock to top up the egg quota, a heavy laying free range bird from northern france. Very gentle and docile, our most prolific layer and a long first year. 320+ eggs per year.

Day old chicks

SILVER SUSSEX We breed the male line of these birds, who are fast to come into lay and a very striking looking animal with the bonus of loads of eggs

We cross with tougher birds to create attractive, stronger feathering in a silkie shape and temperament. Lots of fun and very popular with the kids as pets in the mix of better layers.
